Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound Italian sausage, mild or spicy
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 jar, 24 ounces marinara or pizza sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, optional
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 8 ounces pepperoni slices
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 cups cooked penne or rotini, optional
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley or basil
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F
- Lightly grease a deep 9×13-inch baking dish
- Place a large skillet over medium-high heat
- Add the ground beef and Italian sausage
- Cook until browned, breaking the meat into small crumbles with a wooden spoon
- Drain extra grease if needed
- Add the onion and garlic
- Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until the onion softens and the garlic smells warm and fragrant
- Stir in marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, crushed red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper
- Let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes, until slightly thickened and glossy
- If using pasta, spread cooked penne or rotini across the bottom of the baking dish
- Spoon half of the meat sauce over the pasta
- Sprinkle with mozzarella and Parmesan, then add a layer of pepperoni
- Repeat with the remaining meat sauce, more cheese, and more pepperoni
- Finish with the final cup of mozzarella on top
- Cover loosely with foil and bake for 25 minutes
- Remove the foil and bake for 15 to 20 minutes more, until the top is bubbling and golden
- Let the bake rest for 10 minutes before slicing
- Sprinkle with parsley or basil and serve warm
